Sibiu is one of Romania's cultural and tourism capitals located in southern of Transylvania.
Delightful and charming old town with lots of things to do and to see, often with a carnival atmosphere, Sibiu was voted the European Capital of Culture in 2007. The famous Forbes magazine ranks Sibiu on the 8th place for "the most idyllic places to visit".
The Small Square (Piata Mica) became in the last few years the best place to go out in Sibiu because of the big range of pubs, cafes, restaurants and terraces during the summer. The Brukenthal National Museum, comparable with Viennese palaces was the first museum in Romania and in this part of Europe. You need to visit also the Astra Ethnographic Museum which is the biggest open air museum in Europe and the second largest in the world located in an extremely beautiful dense forest.
If you come here during winter is good to know that a German Christmas Market is held every year starting from November and up until after New Year so plenty of time to explore and get into the Christmas mood.
Paltinis mountain resort (32 km away from Sibiu) situated at the highest altitude in Romania (1,442m) is appreciated as a winter sports destination and due to the high-level of ozone in the mountain air it is recommended in the treatment of neurasthenia, lung disease and physical exhaustion.
