Brasov - from dynamic, modern city life to old world charm and captivating atmosphere you will have it all. The city is surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains and provides a mixture between medieval history with German influences, a wonderful mountain scenery and a lot of places for fun activities.
The city was founded in 1211 by Teutonic Knights and was developed by the Saxons. The old town is one of the best preserved old towns in Europe with spectacular architecture and old fortifications.
In the city centre, you’ll certainly be fascinated by the Market Square, (Piaţa Sfatului), with the greatest Black Church, the largest religious settlement in Gothic style from south-eastern Europe, built in the XIV century. For a great panorama of the city you can go with the cable car to Tampa mountain peak. On your way up there you can also see the old walls of the city.
Brasov also makes a fabulous base for exploring the surrounding countryside where air is fresh and clean and the people are very friendly. Not far from the city you will find villages Prejmer and Viscri with fortified churches (UNESCO World Heritage sites), Bran Castle at 20km near Braşov, Râşnov citadel (15km to the west of Braşov), Poiana Brasov, Romania’s most famous skiing resort, Predeal is an other important mountain resort, and at around 50 km in the Prahova Valley you can visit the Peles Castle.
